Hypersensitivity of the immediate type, commonly referred to as Type I hypersensitivity, is an immune system response in which the body reacts rapidly and excessively to a substance it has identified as a threat, known as an allergen. This category of hypersensitivity underlies conditions such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, urticaria, and anaphylaxis. The reaction is mediated by immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies and mast cells, which release histamine and other inflammatory mediators within minutes of allergen exposure.
