Hyperparathyroidism is a condition in which one or more of the four parathyroid glands — small glands situated near or behind the thyroid gland in the neck — produce an excess of parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH plays a central role in regulating calcium and phosphorus balance in the blood and bones. In primary hyperparathyroidism, overproduction is most commonly caused by a benign tumor called an adenoma on one of the glands. Secondary hyperparathyroidism typically arises as a compensatory response to chronically low calcium levels, often linked to chronic kidney disease or vitamin D deficiency. Elevated PTH can lead to hypercalcemia, and affected individuals may experience symptoms such as fatigue, bone pain, kidney stones, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Conventional medical management ranges from careful monitoring and medication to surgical removal of the overactive gland in more significant cases.
