Hypercalcemia is a condition characterized by an abnormally elevated level of calcium in the bloodstream, exceeding the normal range of approximately 8.5 to 10.5 milligrams per deciliter. Calcium is an essential mineral involved in bone formation, nerve signaling, muscle contraction, and hormonal regulation, but when levels rise too high, a variety of symptoms can emerge, including fatigue, nausea, frequent urination, confusion, and in more severe cases, cardiac irregularities or kidney stones. Common underlying causes include overactive parathyroid glands (hyperparathyroidism), certain malignancies, prolonged immobilization, excessive vitamin D intake, and some medications. Because calcium metabolism is tightly regulated by parathyroid hormone, vitamin D, and calcitonin, disruptions in any of these pathways can contribute to elevated serum calcium.
